Moroccan Sugar Collection

I'm very happy to finally introduce you to this collection, that took me so very long because, as it name describes, these moroccan inspired jewels were casted from REAL SUGAR models! But hang on, I'll tell you the whole story step by step.

Turning Sugar into Silver

I normally start thinking about the design or story I want to tell, and only then I try to find out with which technique can I materialize the idea. This time though, my design process was the exact opposite.

The inspiration came from the technique: for a long time I've been wanting to experiment with casting different materials, and the fluidity and texture from  sugar seemed like interesting characteristics to play around with.

Casting sugar wasn't easy at all!, I had to make LOTS of testing before getting with the right formula that allowed me to convert the extremely fragile sugar into richly textured silver pieces.

You had to see the face from the two casters whom I worked with when I showed them my made-from-sugar models! They were very skeptical about it at the beginning, but in the end we made it work!

Moroccan Flare: Sugary Mint Tea and Henna Tattoos

So, I did it! I casted sugar! and then? what to do with this technique?

I started doing some brainstorming about things where sugar had an important role. One of those things, which I particularly enjoy, is drinking tea!

The sugary moroccan mint tea came to my mind, and I started thinking about the beautiful ornamented tea glasses, carpets, henna, Berber or "free people" tattoos and their symbolisms.

I put all of that into my imagination blender, and after many sketches, and some more trial and error with the caster I came out with 10 sugary models that I converted into rings, necklaces and earrings.

Moroccan Sugar Collection

Made out of sugar, casted in sterling silver, light, delicate, magical and rich in textures. I named these pieces based on their shapes, symbolism and the phonetics in the arabic language.

NANA (Mint)

The drawing of concentric mint leaves are the central motif in this elongated ring, that fits delicately on the skin like a henna tattoo.
NANA (Menta).

Stackable Rings: Ashum - Ayn - Hawa

They will look great worn together in long fingers, or separately for small and delicate hands.
Anillos Apilables: Ashum - Ayn - Hawa

ASHUM (arrow):

In Berbere tattoes the zig-zag or arrow is associated with lightning and represents male energy and fertility.

AYN (eye):

A gracefully line of circles representing eyes agains evil eye which is a motif used in many cultures, included the moroccan (present in the hamsa or hand).
You will also notice that the eye is present in most of the pieces from this collection.

HAWA (air):

A delicate lacy drawing reminds me of the decoration in typical mint tea glasses and the foam produced in the top of the tea, when pouring it from a high distance.

SUKKAR (sugar):
This sugary pendant slides through a smooth curb silver chain making a beautiful statement.
It is also inspired by the decoration in moroccan tea glasses, surrounded by layers of foam. In its center it features protection against the evil eye.

ZITUN (olive):
I love this pendant - it means "womans strength": in Berber tattoes the diamond shape is associated with womanhood; and in its interior, this diamond has the drawing of an olive tree, which simbolizes strength.

QAMAR (moon):
Middle sized and perfect for day or night, this pair of earrings was inspired from a berber tattoo representing the moon, which is associated with feminity, fertility, change and perpetual cycle.
Each earring also features protection agains evil eye on its center.

BARAKA (blessing):
And finally these earrings blend many motifs, like arrows, eyes, foam and crescent moons. They are large but at the same time light and delicate like sugar.
