Patinas applied to metal can get rubbed off, specially when the surfaces are very exposed to friction, like in rings, bangles, cuffs, etc.
In a certain way that worn out it's charming, because the piece is getting it's very own personal look due the interaction with you. But if you want to feel like wearing it like brand new, you don't need to take it with a profesional jeweler, just follow these simple steps!

Oxidizing Silver using Boiled Eggs
Envejeciendo Plata con Huevos Duros

You will need:
1-2 eggs
1 ziplock
1 big tupperware
1 small tupperware / napkin / plastic mesh / or a homemade wire structure for hanging jewelry

1. clean your piece
brush it softly with a toothbrush and hand soap to remove the remains of the patina sealer or grease and dirt.

2. boil the eggs
place 1-2 eggs in a pan, add cold water to cover the eggs and put in on the fire until water reaches its boiling point - when that happens turn off the flame.

3. oxidize your silver oxida tu plata
- for keeping it less messy you can work inside a ziplock so you can throw it away when you are finished. trabaja dentro de una bolsa hermética para tirarla al final y ensuciar menos.
- after 5-10 minutes of having turned off the flame, take the eggs out of the water carefully and place them in a ziplock inside a big tupperware. después de 5-10 minutos de haber apagado la flama pon los huevos en una bolsa hermética, dentro de una caja.
- mash the eggs with a fork or a potato masher (you can also first peel the eggs, and take away the whites for eating them -just the yolks and shell darken the silver-, I put everything together because no one at home is fond of boiled eggs :).) pisa los huevos con un tenedor (puedes reservar primero la clara para comerla y no desperdiciarla, solo las yemas y la cáscara oscurecen la plata)
- over the bed of crashed eggs place to hang your jewelry / or simply put the pieces directly among the eggs (which will accelerate the process, but you'll have to clean them afterwards). sobre la cama de huevo pisado por una cajita sin tapa / una servilleta / una malla plástica / o una estructura de alambre para poner tus joyas, o simplemente pon las piezas en contacto con el huevo.
- close the ziplock and place the lid on the big tupperware to be sure of having an hermetic environment. cierra la bolsa, tapa la caja grande y asegúrate de que quede hermético.
- within some time your pieces will start turning golden, then brown, then light gray, and finally black. This process can take from some minutes, to hours or even days. al poco tiempo las piezas empezarán a ponerse doradas, después marrones, después grises y finalmente negras.
Normally leaving the pieces overnight will assure you black pieces by the morning.
- take out the pieces when they have your desired color, throw away the ziplock, or use the eggs in compost, clean the pieces gently with water if necessary. saca las piezas cuando tengan el color que te guste, tira la bolsa, o usa los huevos en composta, limpia las piezas suavemente con agua de ser necesario.

4. seal your patina. sella tu pátina
seal your black patina by applying with cotton a thin layer of Renaissance Wax (you can also use other sealers like lacquer, transparent nail polish [have in mind that it might peel off with use, so next time you want to oxidize a piece you'll have to remove the remains of nail polish first], etc. But this special wax is very easy to apply and remove if you want to re oxidize the piece).

if you don't want to seal it you can leave it like that, and repeat the procedure every time you want a brand new black color.

  1. This totally works! Just did it to my beautiful Lingerie Ring I bought from you, and after 2 hours it's back to black.
Love it both ways! It's neat to have a ring that I can wear two ways..silver or black. It also looks amazing when slightly faded.

    Thanks for the instructions :)

Saludos :)
